Sequels That Turned Out Better Than We Thought

It's easy to be negative about this generation of gaming. Overpriced DLC, publishers that are out to snag our money even faster, dumb DRM, and other issues that plague our gaming. Another big problem is the wave of bad sequels that do nothing to further the series but drag it down.
Not all new iterations are bad. In fact, some are arguably better than their predecessors.
Max Payne 3
Before launch, I saw this as some useless cash-in that couldn't possibly live up to the other games. How wrong I was. Not only is the shoot-dive-everywhere gameplay intact, so is Max's personality. His adventure through a decrepit setting has scenes more varied than even Max Payne 2's urban levels.
Sure, you can use cover, but that's no fun at all. Catering to the cover lovers and MP fans without diminishing both areas. Awesome job Rockstar.
Silent Hill Downpour
Technical issues dirty this new SH game, but that's a small price to pay for a real horror game. Downpour encourages players to run from encounters, which separates itself from other horror games of this generation. It's rare that you won't be clinching the controller in fear.
Soul Calibur 5
Nobody calls the SC games balanced, but 5 changes that. Due to some time constraints, the Project Soul team could only work on the gameplay and not much else. That's fine, because having a fighting game care about what matters to the hardcore is better than focusing on a few throwaway modes. Faster, less spammy and thankfully containing a better online, SC5 finally takes the series to a proper level.
Dynaty Warriors 7
After DW6, many fans were burned by the horrible Renbu system which kills all the fun of murdering thousands of peons. DW7 easily topples the previous games and then some. A weapon switching system keeps combat fresh, while a new Conquest Mode adds hours of content. Best Dynasty Warriors game, bar none.
